Music: Rock/Pop Allen Toussaint w/ Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue

Though Allen Toussaint is closely associated with New Orleans, the piano player/producer/songwriter's list of past collaborations extends well past Louisiana state lines. The Band, Patti Labelle, Etta James, and Paul McCartney have drawn on Toussaint's talents, and many more have covered his songs. Famous tunes like "Working in the Coal Mine" and "Fortune Teller" mix R&B, funk, and zydeco with a freewheeling aplomb that represents perfectly the sounds of the Bayou. Toussaint plays the piano with visible joy, though his free concert at Stern Grove serves as a sobering reminder of New Orleans' still-precarious position, three years after Katrina.
