NOV 30 - DEC 6
Boxing Day is but a month away, so no wonder the pugilists are warming up. The cyclists, meanwhile, are keeping cool (even though it never really gets too frosty in our part of the Golden State). Coming down from a tryptophan kick, and gearing up for holidays hot on its heels, it's a month for wining and dining, friends and families, kicks and comfort. So keep the faith, and spread it.

MUSIC: Indie Rock
Sondre Lerche w/ the Golden Republic

when: Tue 11.30 (8pm)
where: Slim's (333 11th St, 415.255.0333)
price: $17
links: Event Info | Sondre Lerche | The Golden Republic

San Franciscans get a tasty Norwegian treat this Tuesday when singer-songerwriter Sondre Lerche returns to our fair city, hitting the stage at Slim's. Promoting his second album, Two Way Monologue, the youthful Lerche promises to charm, sing, and sway as he plays old favorites like "Days That Are Over" and "You Know So Well," mixed with equally lush newer material, all interspersed with his trademark witty banter. Fans of Burt Bacharach, Brian Wilson, and the Beatles will not be disappointed by Lerche's hybrid bossa nova/folk-pop. His Kansas City pals, the Golden Republic, start out the night. (NN)

Which 2003 Hollywood blockbuster featured a much less charming character engaging in a crazed "two-way monologue" of his own? The ninth and tenth responses to correctly name the film and character each win two tickets to this show.

MUSIC: Indietronica
Morr Music Tour feat. Lali Puna, Duo 505, and Alias

when: Tue 11.30 (9:30pm)
where: Bottom of the Hill (1233 17th St, 415.621.4455)
price: $10
links: Event Info | Morr Music | Lali Puna | Duo 505 | Alias

It is a mystery how many top-bill acts can fit into this single weeknight show. Still, the best known act of the night isn't on the lineup per se: seminal indie-electronic band the Notwist may not play, but their presence is felt as Notwist frontman Markus Acher performs with labelmates Lali Puna. This type of overlap hints at the cohesive nature of Morr Music's characteristic sound; as the different permutations of artists produce novel, engaging music, their warm electronics, acoustic shoegazing, and delicate vocal interpretations align to welcome the listener into strangely familiar territory. Anticon's Alias, an occasional Morr collaborator, and the Groovebox-wielding Duo 505 (featuring B. Fleischmann and Herbert Weixelbaum) also perform. (MJ)

THEATRE
Pugilist Specialist

when: Wed 12.1 - Sun 12.19 (Tue-Sat: 8pm / Sun: 3pm)
where: The Magic Theatre (Fort Mason Center, Building D, 3rd Fl, 415.441.8001)
price: $20-34
links: Event Info

Winners of three Edinburgh Fringe First Awards, the five-member Riot Group, led by writer/artistic director Adriano Shaplin, bring their politically-charged Pugilist Specialist to the Magic Theatre for some in-your-face theatre that should leave you primed and politically charged. Incorporating field recordings and an array of texts, from Moby Dick to Marine Corps manuals, the plot to assassinate an evil leader in a foreign land unfolds through an intense but largely motionless performance, exhibiting the stylized linguistic cadences that have put this troupe on the map. (PPC)

MUSIC: Indie Rock
Neko Case w/ the Sadies

when: Wed 12.1 & Thur 12.2 (8pm)
where: Bimbo's (1025 Columbus Ave, 415.474.0365)
price: $20 / $18 advance
links: Event Info | Neko Case | The Sadies

From punk bands to power-pop supergroups, Neko Case is definitely a contemporary musical overachiever. As a solo performer, Case embraces vintage sounds found in old-time Nashville, Detroit, and Southern California. But what her fans clamor for most is her uniquely resonant and enlivened tremolo, celebrated on her new live album, The Tigers Have Spoken. Case's astounding yet seamless stylistic leaps are complemented by backing band the Sadies, a group also toeing many genre lines, from country and bluegrass to garage rock. (CT)

The tigers have spoken, but they're not the only ones: name your top five famous talking animals. The two best lists each win a pair of tickets to tonight's show.

SPOKEN WORD
Saul Williams w/ Thavius Beck

when: Wed 12.1 (8pm)
where: Great American Music Hall (859 O'Farrell St, 415.885.0750)
price: $15
links: Event Info | Saul Williams | Thavius Beck

Most hip-hop punk poetry sounds like creative writing grad students stringing together the angrier motifs of their exercises — and setting such doggerel to music only elevates the cacophony. But Saul Williams is a rare cat whose words really do seem to emanate from the unheeded group-mind of political rap. His new self-titled album has a couple of tracks of so-called rap-metal that out-rock and out-think pretty much everything from that crusty little world (with Rage Against the Machine's Zack on a couple of songs). William's future may not be platinum, but no one can accuse it of not being well thought out. Multi-instrumentalist Thavius Beck (aka Adlib) opens with dark, industrial-influenced beatscapes. (PO)

With which other artists has Zack de la Rocha recorded? The third and eighth to correctly name at least four each win a pair of tickets to this show.

CITY GEM
Ghetto Gourmet

when: Thur 12.2 (7pm)
where: The Mile High Club (3629 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Oakland, 510.654.4549)
price: $30 / $50 with unlimited drinks
links: Event Info

The aptly named Ghetto Gourmet is a unique dinner party event hosted by the Townsend Brothers, where diners feast upon world-class cuisine in a casual environment with live entertainment. For the past year, Joe and Jeremy Townsend (one a former chef from a top SF restaurant, the other a poet) began hosting this event on Monday nights from a basement. What started as a casual dinner party among friends has grown to include friends' friends, strangers, craigslisters, and others — upwards of 50 people attend each event, all equally welcome. The menu includes four courses and changes every time — you could be served anything from vegan gumbo to stuffed turkey with prosciutto mashed potatoes. Hold on to your forks and get ready to make new friends. (SSS)

Note: There is limited seating and reservations are required via email. The Ghetto Gourmet is also held on Thur 12.9 & 12.16.

MUSIC: Electronic Pop
Pepito

when: Thur 12.2 (9pm)
where: 12 Galaxies (2565 Mission St, 415.970.9777)
price: $7
links: Event Info | Pepito

A new Latin pop experience emerges when Ana Machado and José Márquez, better known in the indie music arena as Pepito, create their blend of smartly orchestrated compositions, electronic-aided rhythms, and intertwining vocals. Since 2001, the Bay Area duo has put out a couple of notable albums, including their politically engaging debut Migrante; their wide-ranging sound has drawn comparisons to bands like Tortoise and the Postal Service. Pepito won't have to travel too far tonight to give fans an earful of punky IDM goodness when they take to the stage at the Mission's 12 Galaxies. (JC)

Pepito is named after a Latin American character who "asks inappropriate but funny questions." Give us your best example of such a query — our two favorites each win a pair of tickets to this show.

MUSIC: Indie Rock
Edith Frost w/ Manishevitz

when: Thur 12.2 (9pm)
where: Bottom of the Hill (1233 17th St, 415.621.4455)
price: $10
links: Event Info | Edith Frost | Manishevitz

Edith Frost plays the kind of music that jukeboxes were invented for. We're not talking roadhouse honky-tonk, we're talking tear-in-your beer, sing-your-sorrows-to-sleep, ghost-of-Patsy-Cline kind of music. Music that makes you want to shut out the cold, pull your scarf tight, and hunker down for the winter. Manishevitz have flipped their way through the indie rock Rolodex for the past few years: they started folky, moved on to Brian Wilson baroque, and are currently sitting pretty in full pre-new wave Roxy Music form. Fulfilling Eno's legacy, they've been known to expand songs with spacey instrumentals built on synth pads and guitar bleeps. (JCF)

MUSIC: West Coast Fusion
Ozomatli w/ 2Mex

when: Fri 12.3 (9pm) & Sun 12.5 (8pm)
where: The Fillmore (1805 Geary Blvd, 415.346.6000)
price: $25
links: Event Info | Ozomatli | 2Mex

In what has fortuitously transformed into an annual event, LA-based crew Ozomatli make yet another serpentine holiday drive up the 1 to our city — with their raucous brand of Latin jazz, ghetto soul, southern funk, and "cutting" edge turntablism in tow — for a two-night set. Back on the road to promote their aptly-titled new release, Street Signs, Ozomatli always promise a stage full of exceptional characters, and MC Jabu Smith-Freeman keeps the audience fixated with his staccato rhymes, inventive inflections, and hard-hitting, socially conscious lyrics. 2Mex, of LA's Visionaries, opens the show. (SNS)

What other high-profile rappers have appeared on Ozomatli's albums? The tenth to name at least three wins a pair of tickets to this show.

MUSIC: Psych Rock
Charalambides w/ the Blithe Sons

when: Fri 12.3 (9pm)
where: Hotel Utah Saloon (500 4th St, 415.546.6300)
price: $7
links: Event Info | Charalambides | The Blithe Sons

While the new kids on the folk/psychedelic/avant-garde block are still having the same flashbacks, this evening's double bill stars some under-recognized practitioners of the people's music who've long tapped into an alternate vein of freakout. Texas trio Charalambides specialize in heavy ambient guitar rides that combine the wistfulness of Lone Star plains and the minimalism dear to sound-art curators. The Blithe Sons, meanwhile, traffic in limited-edition CDRs and lathe-cut 7-inch records from under the banner of the Bay's own sparkling Jewelled Antler collective, the region's most free-thinking wavers of the freak flag. (PO/PS)

DJ
Dego

when: Fri 12.3 (10pm)
where: Milk (1840 Haight St, 415.387.6455)
price: $10
links: Milk | Dego

It seems fitting enough that the man who is often credited with creating the first drum 'n bass track, "Mr. Kirk's Nightmare," has been finding other avenues such as hip-hop and electro to explore his musical passions. This is, of course, Dego McFarlane — one half of legendary production duo 4 Hero and the host of other projects including DKD, Tek 9, and Nu Era. The always forward-thinking Dego drops eclectic but seamless future soul via broken beat, nu-jazz, d 'n b, and other styles. Tonight's special set at Milk promises sweet music to the ears of the Frisco massive. (JC)

ART
Creature Comfort: New Langton Arts' Auction Preview

when: Sat 12.4 - Thur 12.9 (12-6pm)
where: New Langton Arts (1246 Folsom St, 415.626.5416)
price:  FREE
links: Event Info

Even if the 20th Annual Creature Comfort fundraising dinner is out of your holiday/nonprofit budget, it's worth your while to stop in at New Langton Arts for today's free preview, or Monday's champagne toast, to enjoy the artwork. The silent and live auctions include works by Bruce Conner, Kota Ezawa, Lee Friedlander, Todd Hido, Jenny Holzer, Dennis Hopper, David Ireland, Barry McGee (aka Twist), Bill Owens, Laurie Reid, and Ed Ruscha. A highlight is a New Langton and Trillium Press-commissioned limited-edition print by San Francisco artist RIGO 23. Auction proceeds support Langton's innovative contemporary art projects. (EC)

Note: Check for info and pricing for the champagne toast, live auction, and other events.

READING
Inspiring Thirst: Vintage Selections from Kermit Lynch

when: Sat 12.4 (6pm)
where: Cody's Fourth Street (1730 4th St, Berkeley, 510.559.9500)
price:  FREE
links: Event Info | Kermit Lynch

Kermit Lynch proves that passion drives success. After opening a wine shop back in the '70s, he became a successful importer and retailer, and eventually added masterful wine writer to his reputation. Due to his fondness for small producers and his quirky, unconventional style, his imports came predominantly from obscure French wineries. To provide context for these largely unfamiliar selections, he wrote newsletters that provided descriptions but avoided the usual cryptic language of oenophiles, ascribing to the wines human traits and personality that proved entertaining as well as educational. His most recent book, Inspiring Thirst, is a collection of these newsletters and the follow-up to Adventures on the Wine Route, published over 20 years ago. (SSS)

MUSIC: Gospel
Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir Annual Christmas Concert

when: Sat 12.4 (7:30pm)
where: Paramount Theatre (2025 Broadway, Oakland, 510.465.6400)
price: $10-35
links: Event Info | Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir

Returning home to the majestic Paramount Theater for their 19th Annual Christmas Concert, the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, under the direction of Terrance Kelly, radiate a truly interfaith, multiracial, and multicultural presence as members join to celebrate the evocative power of black gospel music. While not back home in Oaktown, the OIGC have performed at San Quentin prison, the Seneca House, and at other benefit concerts, in addition to having shared the stage with the likes of jazz legend Pharaoh Sanders and pop icon Peter Gabriel. No matter your faith, tonight's concert is destined to lift your spirits. (SNS)

FUNDRAISER
SF Bicycle Coalition's Winterfest 2004

when: Sun 12.5 (6pm)
where: SomArts Cultural Center (934 Brannan St, 415.552.2131)
price: $20 includes SFBC membership / $5-10 sliding scale for members
links: Event Info

San Francisco's bike lanes may seem paltry when compared to those of central Europe or Scandinavia, but fortunately we've got the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition to promote bike-based commuting, protect cyclists' rights, and lobby for environmentally friendly transportation solutions. They also throw one heck of a party, which is reason enough to join up and head down to Winterfest, where you can buy cycling-related art, bid on gear and getaways, and mingle with the largest crew of rolled-cuff-wearing pedal-pushers you'll find outside the Zeitgeist. (PS)

MUSIC: Folk Pop
Jonathan Richman w/ Jesse DeNatale and Jua feat. Mother Earth

when: Sun 12.5 (8pm)
where: Great American Music Hall (859 O'Farrell St, 415.885.0750)
price: $15
links: Event Info | Jonathan Richman | Jesse DeNatale

Maybe it's a bit much to tag him as a political agitator, but with Jonathan Richman's latest urban-acoustic opus, Not So Much to Be Loved as to Love, it's obvious that he's taken a considerably different approach to his commonly soft-hewn ditties. Sure, he's long since traded in fast cars for Paris cafés, but his slant here, in which Salvador Dalí grants him freedom in his dreams and prisoner Mumia Abu Jamal has a voice that "doesn't sound like it comes from death row," is one of conscious, rewarding maturity. It all adds up to probably Richman's saddest and most passionate work to date. Jesse DeNatale and Jua open. (KT)

In which film did Jonathan Richman make a series of musical cameo appearances? The 7th and 15th correct answers win tickets to this show.

MUSIC: Indie Rock
Mirah w/ Dear Nora

when: Mon 12.6 (9pm)
where: Bottom of the Hill (1233 17th St, 415.621.4455)
price: $6
links: Event Info | Mirah | Dear Nora

Possibly more than any liberal arts college in the US, Olympia, WA's Evergreen State has churned out a disproportionately large crop of heart-on-sleeve indie rockers. Among the school's grads are members of Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, Sleater-Kinney, and tonight's fine purveyor of queer-pop, Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn. Mirah's indie pedigree has undoubtedly served her well, finding her a coveted spot with K Records across four exceptional and diverse albums (and one more on Yoyo, featuring the Black Cat Orchestra), and lending her achingly tender voice to the Microphones. While she now resides in Philadelphia, Mirah continues to do the Pacific Northwest crowd proud with her DIY ethos, well-traveled guitar, and accomplished songcraft. Twee enthusiasts Dear Nora start things off. (KT)

ART
Meat Show

when: Now through Sat 1.15.05 (Wed-Sat: 12-5pm)
where: San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery (401 Van Ness, 415.554.6080)
price:  FREE
links: Event Info

In guest curator Kara Maria's show at the SFAC Gallery, meat and blood are creatively reconsidered as subject and method. The work of the nine Bay Area artists ranges from spiritual to sociopolitical. Highlights include Laura Splan's wallpaper designs drawn from blood; Elizabeth DiGiovanni and Tim Sullivan's hot-dog stand performance art; Jeanne Friscia's digital kaleidoscopes of foie gras and ground chuck; Laura Dufort's translucent paintings of magnified red blood cells; and Noah P. Lang's sausage-link sculptures. Viewers feel a combination of attraction and repulsion, and leave either more resolutely vegetarian or hungry for a juicy burger. (AL)

CD REVIEW: Daddy G, DJ Kicks
!K7 Records
Released November 2004
$14.99 (Amazon)

A founding father of the Wild Bunch and Massive Attack, Daddy G was instrumental in defining the Bristol sound — a blend of reggae, dub, soul, funk, and hip-hop he originally showcased as a soundclash DJ in the early '80s. In this installment of the DJ Kicks series, the master lays bare the definitive influences of his style, which prove to be anything but the diluted downtempo that cluttered cut-out bins in the late '90s. From the opening strains of Willie Williams' dub classic "Armegeddon Time" to a rare Massive Attack remix of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and a Danny Krivit edit of Aretha Franklin, Daddy G narrates an auditory journey of record-box gems that encapsulates the heart and soul of the trip-hop sound he helped create. (CJN)

AWARENESS: World AIDS Day
This Wednesday is World AIDS Day, when we take pause to remind ourselves that while education (in some parts of the world) is increasing, and drug treatments (for those who can afford them) are improving and extending the lives of many people infected with the disease, worldwide infection rates are still on the rise, and much work remains to find a cure. Most museums and galleries will go dark to observe the traditional Day without Art theme — a reminder of the impact that AIDS has had on creative communities around the globe. Check the World AIDS Day site to get involved, become better informed, and help reverse the effects of one of our generation's most critical ailments. (PS)

This week's selections include 50-50 Sound System with a dub reggae showcase, while staff from everyone's favorite highbrow music mag The Wire host Adventures in Modern Music, highlighting some of the best new artists featured in the publication. Finally, Glass Shrimp is a magazine-format talk show, featuring a live performance from Deerhoof, interviews, and art and literature reviews. (CJN)
